Understanding the GUTEX Products

Frequently asked questions about insulating with softwood fibreboard.

? ? The Black Forest family-owned and operated company GUTEX has been producing insulating board from wood for 75 years now. The design and development of modern, technically nature and environmentally-friendly insulating materials and thermal insulation composite systems as well as the further supplementing of existing product lines are central to the company’s activities.

1.Questions About the Products

Which are the building physical advantages of a GUTEX wood fibre board compared with conventional insulation materials?

GUTEX wood fibre boards are protecting against cold in winter time and heat in summer time! Wood fibre is the material with best specific heat conductivity
.
Further properties are sound insulation, diffusion openness, humid regulation and protection against fire. Wood fibreboard is suitable for use in constructions with Fire Resistance Ratings of up to F90-B.

What materials constitute GUTEX wood fibreboards?

All GUTEX wood fibreboard products are made from spruce and fir chips. Additives include hydrophobizing agents, latex for mechanical strength, glue for adhesion of laminate layers (wet process) or PUR resin (dry process).

a) Wet process: Upon arrival at the plant, the wood chips are thermo-mechanically pulped, mixed with water into a suspension and hydrophobized according to the specific the requirements. The suspension is pumped into a forming box where vacuum pumps, press rolls and circulating air dryer form and dry the boards. After the boards are formed, they are placed on pallets and packaged.
b) Dry process: Upon arrival at the plant, the wood chips are thermo-mechanically pulped. Depending on requirements, the fibres are then sprayed with a hydrophobizing agent and discharged under air pressure, which also dries the fibres. The dried fibres are sprayed with PUR resin solution and distributed in the former. The resin is then allowed to cure and harden in a special curing unit. After the boards are formed, they are placed on pallets and packaged.

Are there methods that can be used to make a board “resistant“ to moisture?

Hydrophobizing agents are added to the boards. (natural resin soap and paraffin) E.g. GUTEX Multiplex-top
How is GUTEX able to guarantee consistent product quality?

The integrated Quality and Environmental Management System (certified according to ISO 9001 and Environmental Audit Regulations) guarantees consistent high quality. Moreover, all of the GUTEX products are subject to quality control by independent materials testing institutions.
What makes GUTEX wood fibreboards environmentally compatible?

First, wood chips, which are the raw materials used to make GUTEX soft wood fibreboards, are by-products of the wood making process. Second, the sawmills from which we obtain our chips are all located nearby, translating into less pollution and consumption of fuel thanks to reduced transport distances. Finally, all our products are manufactured from wood that is obtained through sustained forestry practices.
In addition, GUTEX wood fibreboards are biodegradable and can be recycled, provided they have not been treated with wood preservatives.
GUTEX insulation boards are natural products with no environmental impact and no harmful additives, and testing performed by natureplus backs this.
When a tree burns or decomposes, it releases the same amount of CO² into the environment as it had assimilated during its lifespan. GUTEX boards are manufactured from wood chips and shavings and therefore do not increase the level of CO² gas in the atmosphere.

Where can GUTEX wood fibreboards be used?

GUTEX insulating materials are suitable for a host of applications in both older and new buildings. Some of the applications include, composite thermal insulation systems for facades, thermal insulation of walls, ceilings and roofs, pressure-resistant and load-bearing thermal insulation of large areas, load-bearing above-rafter insulation, sub decking and wall boards with tongue and slot joining, impact insulation for floors, soundproof insulation for parquet and laminate flooring as well as multi-purpose interior use for roofs walls and floor constructions. Wood fibreboard is suitable for use in constructions with Fire Resistance Ratings of up to F90-B. GUTEX insulation boards do not emit hazardous fumes or vapours when burned.
